What Does Website Maintenance Include? A Practical Checklist
What website and software maintenance includes: monitoring, security updates, backups, speed, content and SEO checks, and how a monthly plan works.
The short answer
Website maintenance means checking that the site is up, installing security and software updates, keeping tested backups, fixing bugs, keeping it fast, and checking that forms, payments and tracking still work. Good maintenance also includes small monthly improvements, so the site keeps up with your business.
Why does a site need maintenance?
The software around your site keeps changing. Browsers, plugins, frameworks, hosting software and other services release updates and security fixes all the time. A site that is never updated slowly gets slower, less secure and more likely to break, often at a bad moment such as a campaign launch.
What should happen every week?
Check uptime and error alerts. Review form submissions and payments. Install low-risk updates after testing them. Confirm the latest backup finished. Weekly checks catch small problems while they are cheap to fix.
What should happen every month?
Install bigger updates on a test copy first. Run a security scan. Check page speed. Look for broken links and 404 errors. Review visitor and search numbers. Test restoring a backup. A short written report keeps everyone informed.
What does security work cover?
Fixing known weaknesses, removing unused plugins and accounts, strong passwords and two-step sign-in for admins, access by role, a firewall where useful, and watching for suspicious changes. This lowers the risk but never removes it, which is why backups matter.
Why test backups?
A backup you have never restored is only a hope. Automatic backups stored away from your web server, plus a regular test restore on a test copy, are the difference between a short outage and a lost site.
What about speed and SEO?
Sites slow down as pages, images and scripts pile up. Maintenance compresses images, removes unused code and checks caching. It also checks page titles, descriptions, redirects and sitemaps, so your search visibility does not slip after changes.
What is continuous improvement?
Maintenance keeps your site healthy. Continuous improvement makes it better: new landing pages, clearer buttons, a faster checkout, new connections or small features, based on your visitor data and feedback. Many businesses combine both in one monthly plan.
How does a monthly plan work?
You choose a number of hours per month. Each month we agree priorities, do the work, track the hours openly and send a short report. You can raise or lower the hours with notice. We offer this for sites we built and for sites other teams built, starting with a short audit.
Signs your site needs maintenance now
Pages load slowly. Plugins or software are several versions behind. Forms or payments sometimes fail. Nobody knows when the last backup ran. Or the person who built the site is gone. If any of these sound familiar, start with an audit.
